The Adventures of the Northwest
The Vatnsnes Peninsula is a hidden gem in Northwest Iceland, known for its stunning coastline, rugged landscapes, and rich history. It’s also one of the best places in Iceland to see seals, often spotted lounging along the shores.
One of the most historically significant locations in the area is Illugastaðir. While today it’s a peaceful and scenic coastal spot, it was the setting of one of Iceland’s most infamous tragedies—the events leading to the country’s last execution in 1830. This was where Natan Ketilsson, a local herbalist and healer, was murdered by Agnes Magnúsdóttir and Friðrik Sigurðsson. Agnes, the last woman to be executed in Iceland, was later the subject of the famous novel Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. The haunting history of Illugastaðir adds a layer of mystery to its breathtaking beauty.
Another fascinating spot is Káraborgir, a unique rock formation that stands as a silent witness to the forces of nature shaping Iceland’s landscapes. Surrounded by rugged terrain and open wilderness, it’s a place that sparks curiosity and invites visitors to explore the untouched beauty of the peninsula.
Whether you're racing across rugged trails, taking in the history, or spotting wildlife, Vatnsnes and its surroundings offer an Icelandic experience like no other.
